FUNDRAISING GOAL: $100,000 annually
- The Writing Center serves 3500+ students annually through 1:1 consulting sessions that are available face-to-face, online synchronous, and online asynchronous.
- We help students with any aspect of their writing from understanding an assignment to brainstorming topics and arguments, drafting, revising, and editing.
- We work with students from across the University, in every school and college, at undergraduate and graduate levels.
- Peer consultants make up two-thirds of the staff. Peer consultants receive extensive training and continuing education on topics such as working with clients with disabilities, working with multilingual clients, motivational interviewing, grammar, and growth mindset theory.
- Students who work as peer writing consultants develop many skills that will enhance their work as students and make them strong candidates for future careers, including enhanced writing skills, ability to give meaningful feedback, strong collaboration skills, leadership skills, cultural sensitivity, critical thinking, and problem solving
- Tutoring others deepens understanding of concepts, so peer writing tutors improve as writers themselves
- Research indicates that being a peer writing consultant can be one of the most impactful experiences a student has in college1
- The Writing Center struggles to attract peer consultants from under-represented populations, including BIPOC and multilingual students, as well as students majoring in STEM and business fields
- GOAL: Tuition and stipend support for five students a year to work as peer writing consultants($20,000 per student to cover tuition and competitive pay)
